Artist Quick Draw (June) : Robx Bautista

Robx 2013 2014Slate loves Robx Bautista. There, we said it.  This multi-hyphenate all-around creative person has been featured in our planner for two years now (see thumbnail on left), but he’s never failed to leave us awe-struck with his vibrant creations. The first time we featured him was for our February 2013 edition, his Alice putting a gorgeous twist on our Fate in Fable Month. He’s featured again, this time for June 2014, where his Spirited Tramp sets the mood for our Tranquil Turquoise Month. He’s a talented illustrator, character designer, blogger, avid traveller, artist, and weekend adventurer. Despite all that, he remains good-natured and jovial whenever we communicate with him. What’s not to love? Read about The Creative Dork and his process and where you can catch him next.
Captain Slate: Tell us about yourself!

Robx Bautista: Hello! I am a full-time UI Designer by day, freelance Illustrator by night, and traveler during my free time.

Captain Slate: How did you get into art?

Robx Bautista: Everyone starts creating their own masterpiece as kids, but I realized I can turn this hobby into a career when I was a freshman in college after dropping out of Computer Programming and transferring courses to pursue a degree in Multimedia Arts.

Captain Slate: Has your art/style changed since you started?

Robx Bautista: Immensely! My initial inspiration was drawn from text cards of Tagalized anime when I was in high school. But after being introduced to many forms of art and the different styles of illustrators here and abroad, I was able to take some visual elements from different sources and piece them together to form my own.

Captain Slate: What is the process behind creating your works?

Robx Bautista: It starts with a silly idea which turns into a meaningful thumbnail overnight. I then re-sketch my concept the following day and add little quirks to try and make it look whimsical before I properly pencil it out and move to rendering.

Captain Slate: What are the 5 things that inspire you/your work right now?

Robx Bautista: Travel, personal experiences, movies, character design, and whimsical things.

Captain Slate: What is your favorite work/project so far?

Robx Bautista: I don’t have one. Usually, whatever is my latest work becomes my new favorite.

Captain Slate: Who’s your favorite creative person?

Robx Bautista: There are too many to choose from but if I must go with whoever is at the top of my head, it’s Sachin Teng. Locally, I have always looked up to May Ann Licudine.

Captain Slate: Upcoming projects/shows/events

Robx Bautista: I am currently working on a few illustrations for an iPad app for kids. On the side, I am working on a personal project, which includes concept, creative direction, user experience and design of an app.
