7th International Silent Film Festival Manila

Out of all the film festivals happening in this country (and we are jumping that there are so many!), this one takes the cake, at least for us here at Slate. Only on its 7th run, the International Silent Film Festival combines many of the things we love and just puts it in one big celebration just like that. The first time I ever attended this festival, I was blown away. I did not know what I was going into, which made it more intriguing, and left with the promise that I would never miss a series if I could help it.

I cannot fully describe what happens inside the theater, but just to give you a snapshot: You sit inside Shang Cinema, a black and white film flashes on the screen but there is not dialogue, only facial expressions and gestures. A live local band or musician (legendary ones at that) perform in front of you to provide the live score for the entire film. Raw music and grainy films in harmony!
