February : Attack the Addiction

Addict you say? Perhaps in less-updated times, an image of an emaciated gaunt-faced person with untidy scruff and murky eyes come into the picture. However, in these modern times, we Filipinos already use the term loosely, as in “adik ka talaga”, which means that times may have changed. Merriam Webster said it best when it defined being addicted as to devote or surrender oneself to something habitually or obsessively. Hence, now more than ever, we think addiction may be anything from food to shopping to video games. Tell us, what are you addicted to? What do you obsessively devote or surrender yourself to? Is it playing online games? Social networking? Perhaps eating sweets or partying at clubs? How about relationships? Maybe you’re addicted to work but do not even realize it? It doesn’t always have to be snorted, smoked, or guzzled down; it can be those things that we are so used to that we don’t even notice how addicted we are to them anymore. Think about it. Almost all of us are guilty of being addicted to something.

Well, we here in Planet Slate say that if you’re going to be addicted to something, then be addicted to life. As our featured note in the first few pages of February says: Get drunk. Drunk with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you please. But get drunk. We’re not saying throw everything away, let loose, and go wild. It’s just that we’ve noticed that we have been so busy taking care of things, accomplishing tasks left and right, that we forget to take care of ourselves and we lose touch of what we want. We’re so caught up in what we’re accustomed to, that perhaps we forget the small things that will really make us excited and happy. We multi-task and get trapped in the daily demands of life that we misplace rest and laughter.

How about this month, we balance it out. How about we drown ourselves in laughter and get trapped in the whimsy once in a while. Fulfill everything, take notice, be alive, and not just survive. No matter what our addiction is, how about we try to take a breather and surrender ourselves to experience and adventure instead. How about we grab hold of our addictions and re-create it into something new. Let’s be addicted to life; not just to the familiar and imperative parts, but also to all the delightful trivial details that come with it.

Share us your story about how you get drunk with life this month! We would love to be surprised by your stories!

LIVE CREATIVELY!
