Celebrate International Museum Day 2012!

According to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), every year since 1977 International Museum Day is organised worldwide around May 18. This day is an occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society. ICOM Advisory Committee organises the theme of this event that, given the high number of countries involved, lasts a day, a weekend, a week or even a month.

In celebration of this worldwide (supercool!) event, our local museums, Ayala Museum and The Mind Museum, will have free or discounted admission on that special day! Check out the deets:

1. Ayala Museum

Ayala Museum will be open to visitors and museum-enthusiasts for free on May 18. Visit the ground to fourth floor galleries during museum hours from 10 am to 7 pm, and experience their fascinating collections on history, art, and heritage.

May: The Anti-Apathy Assignment

Stop. Unhand that computer mouse, that tablet, that phone, or that pack of large potato chips. After you read this paragraph, look up from the screen and look around you. Take it in, whatever you see happening around you. Acknowledge it, understand it, and come up with an idea from it. Doesn’t matter if it’s absurd or trivial, just take notice and be aware even for a minute.

Now, wasn’t that refreshing? Funny maybe or irrelevant, but refreshing.

We go through the motions of everyday so regularly and so routinely that we become used to what we almost expect we are going to experience. We almost memorize the big steps we need to accomplish – wake up, bathe, dress up, eat, commute, work, study, eat, go home, sleep – that we tend to ignore what we’re stepping on sometimes. Our important tasks are always calling to us that we do not have time to recognize other inherently important things.

We, here at Planet Slate, admit that we get so busy sometimes that we are guilty of these crimes of indifference. So, we’ve given ourselves a list of simple tasks for this month that hopefully, we can turn into positive habits. Perhaps you would like to join in the fun and accomplish this list as well (even before we do!).

We call this the Anti-Apathy Assignment:

1. Say hello to an office mate or classmate that you have never spoken to before, and give her/him a compliment.

2. Smile and say thank you to at least one person everyday. He/she should be one of those vital people who we always pass by but never talk to – security guards, receptionist, janitor, driver, parking attendant, etc.

3. Take part in at least 1 event for a good cause. It can be a run for the environment, or an exhibit for indigenous people, or a simple bake sale for children with cancer.

4. Donate to one cause you really think should be donated to. It doesn’t have to be monetary, but it should come from a sincere place.

To make sure we accomplish the task and practice what we preach, we shall post updates of our accomplished tasks on our Facebook Page. So don’t be surprised if you see our status saying “I had a lovely chat with the security guard and I gave him a cookie”. We encourage you to do the same and share with us your mini-success stories! Potato
Here at the Planet Slate HQ, anything that cheers us up deserves a high five! In this case, this quirky and funny potato cracked us up so we’re awarding it a Sloot! Are we too old to get what the connection between a potato and a straight bang hair cut is? Congratulations, Deirdre Benzon Suva! You get this chic ceramic tumbler you can reuse! No more paper cups and plastic bottles, yes?

Mug
Each of us owns a mug here at Planet Slate HQ so it’s only natural to pick the mug as one of the three random items! A bright cyan colored mug with a radical print like that plus the word create deserves to win a Punk Primate Munky Mug from our friends from Munky Bizniz! Congratulations Mariane Go! We also would like to acknowledge your wonderful spread! Good job!

For the Overall Winner
We chose this spread because of the many spins on the items! For example: turning the potato into a fries box, and a spacey watch that says GO every time you look at it. It might not be the favorite on the album but we absolutely recognize the thought that went in every item in the spread! Congratulations, Mina Cruzada! Well deserved! We totally agree that 2012 is all about seeing things differently! For that, let us reward you (aside from the certificate, shirt, and feature) with a Compact Mini Sketch Set and a set of Mini Watercolor Pencils from Royal Langnickel! I wanted these for myself when I saw them! Hahaha. Congratulations!

Found: VVG Table in Taipei

It is no secret that the number one thing on my hit list of places to visit is VVG Something. It is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world and finding it was absolutely the icing on the cake. VVG Table, however, was the cherry!

I dragged my friends to look for VVG Something one rainy afternoon and thankfully they humored me with kindness and understanding. Hahaha. I couldn’t have stressed how important it is for me to be able to visit that treasure of a place. After a series of camera clicks here and there and saying good bye to (really) the most beautiful bookstore I have been to, we came across VVG Table.

Chancing upon it was just perfect timing! The rain was starting to pour again and our feet were tired. The homey, warm, and inviting mood just pulled us in. We had mugs bowls of coffee and shared a warm and sweet plate of sticky date pudding! Look at the photos I took!

If ever you’re in Taipei, please get lost in Zhongxiao Dunhua area! The place is filled with boutiques, stores, food stalls and restaurants to discover!

Slate Reel: Lucas (1986)

Something light and feel-good for this month – Lucas is a film most would not consider as blockbuster, but it certainly has become sort of a minor cult classic for teen movies. Perhaps because of its small unique shifts of conventional teen movie stereotypes or how many of its characters became huge stars; but no matter what it is, the film deserves a call-out this month because of its simple premise and its bespectacled hero.

As in many young teen films go, Lucas centers on an exceptionally intelligent but socially inept 14-year old who is smitten by a girl called Maggie, who only sees him as a friend. This Maggie has her eye on the captain of the football team, Cappie, played by Charlie Sheen, who also becomes sort of Lucas’ protector. A girl best friend on the side is not one to be absent and in this film, she comes in the form of a young Winona Ryder named Rina. The film features a love square (or maybe even a love pentagon if you include Cappie’s ex Alise), with the backdrop of young love and high school insecurities.

However, what makes this 1986 film extra special is Lucas himself, not to mention the droll clever lines he spews out.

“If you’re so depressed, how come you’re eating pizza?”

” I guess everybody has their own idea of fun. Some people go to football games. Other people do less superficial things. “

Lucas is the stereotypical nerdy outcast in high school, but he’s not one to submit and complain about his status. Despite the insults and occasional bullying he receives from the football jock-bullies, he seems to like who he is, and does not mind being different. He does not keep his head down or lurk in the shadows or drown in insecurity as most conventional geeks do. Despite being tormented by bullies, or put in the eternal friend zone by the girl of his dreams, Lucas has enough courage and guts to talk back, fight back, and show everyone that he can do whatever they think he cannot. In the end, he proves exactly what he says in the movie: You can’t ever make me quit, EVER!

Also, it doesn’t hurt to mention that this often overlooked film introduced many a notorious personalities such as Corey Haim, Charlie Sheen, Winona Ryder, Kerri Green, Courtney Thorne-Smith, and Jeremy Piven.

April’s Writing Challenge!

April: Build on your Brilliance

Fourth month of the year – the excitement of a new year has died down, things have settled, and for some, another school year has just ended. We are at the brink of a new quarter (90 days of 2012 have passed can you believe that?), and most of us are starting to question what we are to do for the rest of the year or even for the rest of our lives. Around this time of the year, most of us just have more idle time in our hands; and idle time brings out the shadows, the doubts, and the insecurities. We have more lull moments to start to question ourselves, our capabilities, and even our bodies (especially now that it’s beach season!) without the frenzy to distract us. We also start to get pressured by the whizzing of time before us.

Do not worry.

Simmer in the idle time. Here in Planet Slate, we say this idle time is a challenge. Being young gives us this fantastic opportunity to find ourselves, and it’s up to us what we choose to ignore and welcome. We say tap both the light and the dark. Let the questions come so we can counter them. Let the doubts come so we can refute them. Let the shadows come so we can embrace them and transform them to light that will build our brilliance. A wise man once said, Before the beginning of great brilliance, there must be chaos. Before a brilliant person begins something great, they must look foolish in the crowd. So find that chaos, embrace it, and begin something great. Look and act foolish, but know that we have a purpose.

Let our humanity out, because we think that this in itself is brilliant as it is.

Doll Fins

Captain Slate and several planeteers had a blast last February coloring dolphins and getting a little messy. The World Wide Fund of Nature (WWF) had its very very first Mural Painting Marathon for the benefit of their Adoption Program. Hundreds pledged by painting outlined images of dolphins in four colorful walls to show their support and raise awareness for our local endangered species.

Each dolphin activist gets a paintbrush, a cup, and a number which entitles you to a free photo, henna tattoo, and face paint. Registration is Php 300.

Kids and kids at heart had a blast making our dolphin friends all colorful and crazy.

After we finished with our dolphins, we roamed around and spotted some pretty cool ones. Some of our favorites:

We just love how WWF provided a creative avenue for everyone to show a colorful statement for the environment.
